What is a geometric kernel and why is it important?
A geometric kernel is a component in a CAD system, which does the calculations in the background. Everything you see on your workspaces is based on solid math. The kernel, simply put, defines your models mathematically. Everything you see in Shapr3D can be defined by mathematical calculations, every adjustments, fillets, holes, and chamfers.
Understanding kernels become increasingly important when it comes to importing and exporting your models into a different CAD system, as different kernels have a different understanding of a complicated shape. Translations between these systems always contain a healthy amount of approximation and reparametrization. Overcoming this hurdle is why people use STEP, but the native file format is always better.

Why is this a big deal and how does it make Shapr3D more robust?
First of all, we are the first CAD to implement Parasolid natively on a tablet.
Until 3.0, we were running on Open Cascade which is an open source geometric modeling kernel, that has a lot of bugs, inconsistencies. A lot of crashes, computing fails were thanks to OCCT, and though we are thankful for the development of this kernel, we had to make a step forward.
The step forward was choosing a robust technology that paves the way for rapid feature development, perfect compatibility with major CAD software and previously unheard-of high performance on a single tablet.
