To make your 3D models more realistic, you can add fillets and chamfers. Fillets are rounded edges; they create arc-shaped, smooth transitions between two faces. Chamfers, on the other hand, are sloping transitions between two faces. Typically, these softened edges and corners are used to make objects more safe and attractive.
Create fillets and chamfers
- Go to Tools > Chamfer/Fillet.
- Select the edges you want to chamfer or fillet. If you select a face or body, all connected edges will be automatically selected.
Pull the selected edges in either direction to blend them. The chamfer length is a negative value. The fillet size is a positive value.
Select the dimension label to define exact values of the fillet or chamfer. You can type in the exact value and press the Return key to finalize the dimension.
If the edge you adjusted on a 3D body has other continuous edges, all those edges will also be blended.
You can always fine-tune the fillet or chamfer by selecting the filleted or chamfered face and changing the dimensions. Once you fillet an edge, you cannot change it into a chamfer without completely deleting the fillet, and vice versa. To delete it, just select the filleted or chamfered face and select Delete or press the Delete key.
💡Shortcut💡: If you select the edges first, the menu is customized automatically. From this adaptive menu, go to Chamfer/Fillet.
When you're done blending the edges, click anywhere in the design space to confirm the change.
